I just wrapped up one of the most "off" climbing days ever. My daughter and I set out enthusiastically to go climbing at one of our favorite spots. We arrived to discover 3/4ths of our gear was in another bag, at home. We got creative with the gear we had. Then, I could only make it half way up the route before my fear of heights kept kicking in stronger than ever. I had to back off. I'd climbed this route many times before. I knew I could make it. But I just wasn't feeling "the flow". Something wasn't clicking. We didn't make it up even one easy route that day. It just felt like an off day. Nothing seemed to be going right. Yet, we walked away with two great insights. 1) If you feel like something is off, it is ok to back off. When lead climbing you must climb above your protection point to reach the next bolt to place protection. If you aren't feeling the flow, there is wisdom in backing off instead of pushing through. Pushing through is where accidents happen. This translates to leadership as well. 2) Even if things seem off, there are other things going right, focus on these. My daughter and I found two heart rocks, a new type of fuzzy moss we'd never seen and it was a beautiful day! The view of Tucson from Mount Lemmon (top) and the fuzzy moss we found (below). Not only that, the climbing group next to us noticed we were unequipped and lent us help. They even gave me moral support while I was on lead and 10 feet above my last protection (down climbed to back off safely).
Instead of walking away bummed out, we walked away amused by the day's unfolding. This Monday's coaching resource is a message about living fully, answering a calling and taking a lead in your life. Is there anything you are feeling called to do and yet are holding back from? What will need to shift for you to take the lead? In Service to your Life Purpose, Laurel Elders
