Do I need to become certified to coach?
Coaching is a peer-regulated industry. Currently, the government does not oversee or regulate coaching or credentialing. It's because, unlike therapists or physicians, coaches do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Training, certification, and credentialing options optimize your success as a coach.
Choosing to credential with the ICF is a professional pledge to coaching excellence. Many companies that hire professional coaches will require an ICF credential in good standing.

- Training ensures you have developed a masterful skillset unique to coaching (versus consulting, teaching, or counseling).

What is the difference between certification and credentialing?
Certification is obtained by completing an ICF accredited coach training program and having your coaching skills assessed to meet or surpass the training level you attended (ACC or PCC).
Additional credentialing is offered through the ICF after you graduate from an accredited program and have completed the required coaching hours. Credentials are renewed every three years along with Continuing Education requirements.
Obtaining a credential after certification is a professional choice. If you are going into private practice, the additional credential is optional. However, if you will be directly contracting with companies, they often require an ICF credential in addition to training.

What is difference between an ICF accredited school/program and a "certificate mill" accreditation?
Authentic educational accrediting bodies are recognized, reputable organizations that evaluate and ensure the quality of educational institutions and programs according to rigorous academic and professional standards. They are often recognized by governmental or widely respected non-governmental organizations, and their accreditation is a marker of credibility, providing students with degrees or certifications that are widely accepted.
Sadly, there are fake accrediting bodies out there that are in business to provide a rubber stamp of approval to certificate mills.
Accrediting companies, often associated with certificate mills, provide superficial or non-existent evaluations, offering accreditation to institutions without real oversight, or minimal oversight. These organizations exist primarily to lend false legitimacy to low-quality programs that do not meet established educational standards, misleading students and employers alike.

How do I know which coach training program is going to be the best fit for me?
There are three key considerations when determining which program is the best fit for you. Keeping these factors in mind can help you navigate the hundreds of programs available online and through the ICF-accredited school search.
First, any ICF-accredited program is guaranteed to teach the Core Coaching Competencies, which explain what coaching is. However, whether a program is effective in 1) delivering coach training and 2) teaching you how to coach masterfully is not assessed by the ICF. It’s essential to research this yourself, as some programs are well-structured while others may only touch on concepts without offering clear organization or framing.
For example: It’s one thing to teach you to "just ask questions," but it’s another to teach you how to craft powerful questions and use methods for listening beneath the surface to help clients identify what is left unsaid.
While many schools claim to excel at education, we encourage you to interview past graduates to see how well they deliver on this promise. Our phased approach was developed intentionally because we observed other programs failing to provide the structured support students need. Different schools offer varying learning environments and approaches, so it’s essential to determine what works best for your learning style when choosing a program.
Second, consider the coaching tools and frameworks provided by the program. Do you want to learn only the basics of coaching skills, or would you prefer a program that offers additional frameworks and tools in areas like positive psychology, human potential, the science of transformation, and self-actualization? Selecting a program that goes beyond the basics can lead to significantly better outcomes for your clients. However, if you are just adding coaching to a profession you are already in, you may not need or want the additional depth frameworks.
Lastly, we highly recommend selecting a program that aligns with your core values and beliefs. Your training will stay with you for a lifetime, and being surrounded by like-minded professionals can amplify your learning experience, integration of education, and long-term success.

How much does a professional coach make?
In private practice, coaching fees are self-determined, though there are general standards across the industry. Prices can range from $60/hr for students in training to $500+/hr for Executive Coaches.
We typically see ACC-level coaches charging an average of $100/hr, PCC coaches around $150/hr, and MCC coachescloser to $200/hr. Executive coaches, who attain post-graduate specialized training, typically charge $500/hr and up.
When working for a coaching firm, coaches are usually offered a set rate, like $65/hr. Coaching firms may result in lower pay than private practice, however, coaches save time on marketing and administrative costs.
Workload: Part-time coaches typically manage 8-10 clients, while full-time coaches may take on 20-30 clients. The number of sessions per client varies, but clients typically meet with their coach 2-3 times per month for 30-60 min sessions.

How does life coaching differ from consulting or counseling?
Coaching is a unique approach, distinct from consulting and counseling.
There are two essential journeys in life that lead to realizing one's full potential. The first is a guided journey, where individuals are shown the path to their goals. They learn through external sources—mentors, counselors, advisors, books, and community. Counselors and consultants play a pivotal role in this phase.
However, to experience their fullest growth, individuals must embark on a second journey—a journey of self-discovery. This is where coaching excels. Coaches are experts in empowering people to succeed on this deeper, inner journey.

- Counseling helps individuals work through issues related to past emotional traumas. Therapists diagnose and treat mental and emotional illnesses, playing a crucial role in healing from trauma, abuse, addiction, and other areas where guided emotional support is necessary.
- Consulting involves providing specialized information. Consultants are experts in their field, hired to offer advice and direction based on their expertise.
- Coaching is about helping clients self-discover their inner gifts and wisdom to achieve their goals. It’s a Socratic process of inquiry where coaches guide clients through structured self-inquiry, helping them address inner obstacles while holding them accountable for their forward momentum.

What sets different accredited programs apart from other programs?
All ICF-accredited programs have undergone curriculum review and are assessed to ensure they meet standards. Accreditation confirms that these programs are teaching actual coaching skills, not other modalities.
However, ICF accreditation does not evaluate the efficacy of instruction beyond the core coaching skills. It’s essential to speak with a few graduates to assess whether a program effectively supports growth and development through its instructional design.
Another important consideration is depth. Some coaching programs focus exclusively on teaching coaching skills, while others take learners on a deeper dive into specialized areas. For example, our program focuses on human potential. When you join us, you don't just learn coaching skills—you embark on a profound journey of discovery, unlocking the fullest potential of each person you coach.

What is your online educational philosophy?
Learning with us isn’t just effective, it’s energizing! After Covid, we collectively discovered something amazing: lectures alone don't lead to real learning—they’re like giving unsolicited advice, in one ear and out the other.
What truly works is engagement. The pandemic revealed a powerful truth about online education: it can either be dynamic and engaging or lead to Zoom burnout (Zoom burnout is real!).
As a result, our classes are designed to be fun, interactive, and experience-based. We activate all parts of the mind, body, brain and human spirit. We also see the value in catering to all learning styles with a rich blend of activities—visuals, stories, videos, group discussions, breakouts, and hands-on practice.
We also honor psychological safety by providing introverts the space and down time to reflect and engage in self-care.
Our philosophy is to engage a coaching approach that brings value to our overall learning environment.

Why would people who are already successful hire a coach?
People who are already successful hire coaches because new goals surface as they continue to grow. Anytime we stretch and grow in new ways... new lessons, challenges, and skills are required. Coaches help people close the gap from goal setting to goal attainment.
Successful people and companies hire coaches because success in one area does not guarantee success in all areas. For example: A CEO might have successfully climbed to the top of the corporate ladder, but the emotional intelligence ladder is still at the bottom. This can negatively impact company culture, create high turnover, and cost the company well-deserved profits. Coaches come in to help optimize current success and broaden the positive impact.

How does a coach amplify success?
Coaches help clients eliminate blind spots, locate new gifts, acquire new skills, increase EQ, improve communication, and take action. The entire coaching process is designed to amplify success and is results driven.
There is a joke among fishermen that even a bad day of fishing is still a good day of fishing. It is the same with coaching. Even in sessions that don't go the best, the client still walks away with a strategy to implement!

What problems does a coach typically help solve?
The coach focuses on where the client wishes to go. Coaches are trained to meet clients exactly where they are at. They help the client get to where they want to go and often help them attain much more than the initially established goals.
There is a saying in the coaching world that all business coaching is life coaching after session three. The focus ends up being on the person, not the problem. Coaches help clients focus on what matters and self-examine what inner obstacles are getting in the way. This allows the client to release any unconscious limitations and lean into hidden gifts.
